You’ve booked the newborn session, your diaper bag is (mostly) packed, and you’re wondering what will make these photos feel like your family – not a Pinterest-perfect version of it.
If your browser history is full of searches like, “how to make newborn photos feel more natural” or “how do I get my toddler to sit still for a minute and a half?”…you’re definitely not alone.
One of my favorite sessions this year was beautifully chaotic in all the best ways. The baby needed a few nursing breaks, the siblings took snack breaks and “zoom around the room” breaks, and the parents…well, they just embraced it. What made it work wasn’t a picture-perfect plan, but trust. Trust that I’d capture the tender, silly, everyday moments that tell a real story.
So, as we head toward 2026, I want to share a few gentle ideas to help you plan a newborn shoot that isn’t stiff or stressful – it’s yours.
Let’s Start with This: You Don’t Need a Perfect Plan
I know the planning phase can feel heavy. There’s this quiet pressure to get it just right. Coordinating outfits, cleaning the house if it’s an in-home session, hoping that your toddler doesn’t melt into a puddle right before the shoot…
Here’s something I wish more families knew: the magic usually happens during the in-between. It’s in the cuddles while someone snacks, the gaze between siblings when they think no one is watching, the stillness of a mama feeding her baby.
Whether we shoot in your home or in my cozy space, my approach allows room for all of that. Nothing rushed. Nothing forced.
Now, let’s talk about ideas that will make your Spokane newborn photography session feel personal, calm, and true to this chapter you’re in.
Instead of expecting still, statuesque sibling poses (spoiler alert: they rarely happen), I love giving siblings the freedom to just be themselves.
These glimpses into their relationship – even messy, snack-covered ones – are often the most heart-melting parts of the gallery.

One direction I’m loving more and more is leaning into a documentary-inspired style, especially for in-home sessions.
Think moments like:
There’s something timeless about capturing you living life just as you are – with soft morning light pouring in and love layered into every little routine.

I always tell clients: bring the real stuff. A handmade quilt from grandma. The teddy bear that’s been waiting in the crib for months. The tiniest shoes you’ll probably never use but still love.
These little pieces of your story are infinitely more meaningful than whatever backdrop happens to be trending on social media this year.
Let’s make this session about your story – not just your aesthetic.
While many photographers stick strictly to that 7-10 day window, I actually welcome newborn sessions up to 8 weeks old.
Why?
So if you’re feeling hesitant at 10 days postpartum, know this: there’s no “too late” if it feels like the right time for your family.

Tiny fingers and milk-drunk smiles are precious…but so is the way your toddler tries to feed the baby with a plastic spoon. So is the way your partner gently rubs your back when you’re settling into the couch for the 100th time that day.
These are the moments that matter. These are the parts that become memories.
My job is to help you relax into those moments so you actually enjoy the session, not just the photos after.
If you’re looking for lifestyle newborn photography in Spokane or beyond that’s warm, unrushed, and filled with honest connection, let’s chat.
